headphone concerts for headphone people
non stop streaming festival

2005, june 01 -- sept. 04

Here we go for placard's 8th edition , third try out of a non-stop three month streaming headphone festival.
Placard is a headphone concert festival, playing with concentration, intimacy, time warp, and teleportation. This year it goes on for 97 days non stop, in different cities. It functions under a mode of open program, open for headphone rooms to create performance spaces.

The Brussels Placard-session took place july 14th from 4pm till 02am.
Realtime processed electronic music, live and live-streamed performances.

Were performing in the Brussels Placard:
Code31 [live] -- rgb~Toysband [live] -- zy' zx [live] -- daxit [live] -- oliver's house [streaming from london] -- isjtar [live] -- tim_v [live] -- audiostore [live] -- claudiusmaximus [streaming from london] -- pure [streaming from berlin] -- mxhz/xgz [streaming from linz] -- eavesdropper [live] -- sonicvariable [live] -- 320x22 [live].

Initiiated by Erik Minkkinen, the “festival for headphones” is founded in Paris in 1998. Increasing police restrictions make clubs and venues disappear, a retreat into privacy is to be prevented. The festival in the private flat is organised. Police and neighbours have no reason to complain Every hour clapping after concerts can be heard, but the music itself is transmitted via headphones. The idea becomes accepted, the festival is expanded, repeated and in Paris a kind of institution. In 1999 it takes place along with the festival Phonotaktik in Vienna. With the third edition the internet becomes actively involved as a medium, two spaces in Paris and Tokyo correspond via stream. In 2003 the madness starts everywhere; the festival is expanded to a duration of 95 days (potentially non-stop) all over the world. The listening via headphones is a completely different and extremely focussed experience, both for the performer and for the audience. Placard-sessions can be agonisingly long. In Paris they last meanwhile up to 72 hours. If you hang in there, you will have listening expereriences on the verge of sleep or even in sleep, on waking up, etc.

Both the headphoneroom 'owner' and the performers use the inscription site to self organize the global program. The placard 'owner' receives in his room performers who have submitted a inscription via the site , and streams the shows to the other headphonerooms either passive listeners or waiting to perform.
The site is designed to simplify communication inbetween the performers and the organizers, using automatic emails notifying of incomming inscriptions , accepted deplaced or refused perfomances ; also notifying performers of the creation of headphonerooms in their city.

The ring has grown , last year quite a few new cities got involved ( helsinki , stralsund , benicassim .. .)
This year has allready started with a few prologues - one in berlin during club transmediale - one in bratislava - and one in bologna. The official placard festival opening will be in montreal for the mutek festival and then move on.

During these two past years of a 3 month festival , many new placard ideas have come out of the different organizers. Mainly placard has been starting to adapt itself to the different situations of particular scenes in the different cities. London placard has it's own 20 min set for 12 hours going on well , Tokyo did an out in the Yoyogi park placard under a tree with the phone network there last year .. many different situations for each city involving where you can actually block in your ephemerous space to have a placard going. Ping pong placards where a noveltie last year , giving a game making the longest programs ever , obviously the three month non-stop has not yet been achieved , we have made it for a wensday to a tuesday so far , a record to beat.

This years site has a few new options , you can now as a placard organiser choose the length of your slots ; this came out of london placard , where they prefer the 20 minute format , paris prefers 60 minutes. So now you can make the slots reall short , or real long , a whole new game .
